Upon closer inspection, the seemingly simple check of a fire damper according to the requirements of ÖNORM H6031 can reveal alarming results. It is common for fire dampers to be classified as “professionally inspected” even though they are either inaccessible or not functioning properly. In order to provide clarity and education, we would like to explain to our customers the full scope of our services required for a proper test of a fire damper in accordance with ÖNORM H6031.
The visual inspection of a fire damper includes several important aspects that should ensure that the flaps are properly installed and ready for use. Items reviewed include: 1. Compliance with the latest valid inventory plans 2. Determination of relevant structural changes or Facility changes 3. Fire damper design according to test report (K90) or classification report/declaration of performance (EI90) 4. Installation in accordance with ÖNORM H 6031 and manufacturer's instructions 5. Termination between BSK and building structure 6. Classification "K90" or "EI90" 7. ÜA marking or CE marking 8. Information about the manufacturer 9. Corrosion/contamination 10. Condition of the damper blade and seals 11. Damper identification within the system 12. Limit switches, motor/drive and connections 13. Terminal box and wiring
The functional control of a fire damper includes various steps to ensure that the flap works properly and can fulfill its protective function in the event of a fire. Items checked include: 1. Close the flap at least three times (while present on site) 2. Proper/smooth opening and closing of the closure element (visual/acoustic assessment) 3. Electric remote release and opening of the flap via the central Fire alarm system, if technically possible 4. Check the visual display "closed" and “open” at the BSK; Checking the message of the limit switches and all control displays 5. Checking the holding function in the safety position or fixing the lock after reaching the safety position This functional control ensures that the Fire damper works properly in an emergency and contributes to to prevent the spread of fire and smoke in a building.
